Hezekiah's Tunnel- aka, coolest place I've ever been

Yesterday, we took a field trip to the City of David to check out where Jerusalem used to be (it's not actually included in the current city walls.) It was so fun to be able to see everything we've been studying in Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies. It's crazy that we live about 5 minutes away from all of this! We watched an awesome 3D movie about the history of the area, checked out some archeological digs and explored Hezekiah's Tunnel.
Just for a little background(because I'm a nerd and I study this all day, every day) : After the tribes split up and Israel was living in the north, the people of Judah were still living in Jerusalem. Being right in between nations that were warring on-and-off for thousands of years, they kept getting sieged, mostly by the Assyrians, who were the cruelest and sickest people of the day. After the city was destroyed a few times, a guy named Hezekiah came around and saved the day. He expanded the walls of the city to encompass all the homes of refugees (the children of Israel who had been scattered by this time) and fortify everything against the Assyrians. One of the things they did to prepare for warfare was to dig a tunnel from their water source, Gihon Spring, to the Pool of Siloam, where the people could access it to get water inside the city walls. This meant not only that the people of Jerusalem had water, but that the Assyrians didn't. While the system was used for hundreds of years, it wasn't needed for that particular siege: soon after the Assyrians came and camped outside the city walls, the Lord smote them and they woke up dead. Actually, they didn't wake up at all. And that's the story. Kyle, Daniel and I falling into Warren's Shaft, which is where the people drew water from.
At the entrance to Hezekiah's tunnel.
Dave and I looking (and feeling) giddy inside the coolest tunnel ever.
Again exploring my monkey side, I climbed up the tunnel. It was awesome.
Looking creepy inside the tunnel.
