So the reason David and I are in Toronto is because we both have internships here with Silent Joe, a music production company. They have turned out to be the most wicked awesome internships on earth.
Silent Joe does all kinds of stuff, but mostly choosing and/or arranging and/or writing music for tv shows and commercials. So what we do is: we get a rough-cut episode of a tv series or a commercial, watch it, and come up with a bunch of music that would fit its vibe. So we mostly troll the internet all day, looking for new bands, new sounds and cool music. Like I said, the coolest job on the planet.
The vibe here is great: the offices are in a big industrial space in a great part of town. Upstairs is a recording studio. The sound equipment is killer and the people are so nice and friendly. Marco is our boss and he is a super great guy and has been helping us a lot to find what we want to do and make connections with the right people.
Marco represents a singer named Emily Mover and he got her a job singing the theme song to a kid's show up here called "Stella and Sam". More recently, the show asked Emily and Marco to write a whole kid's album. Last week, they were recording demos of the songs they'd written to send over to the people at Stella and Sam and Marco asked us to come sit in so we could see what a recording session is like.
Which would have been awesome in and of itself. But then Marco asks if we can sing, takes us into the booth and has us record a bunch of backup vocals. It was wicked fun! We had to do everything in 1 or 2 takes, without even listening to it first, so they just rolled tape and David, Marco and I would make up harmonies and little background noises and whatever. We did all kinds of stuff. It was awesome! Marco said he was impressed with how quick we picked it up and with our voices and asked us to be on another project that he's working on, an album of kid's songs that are mostly covers of classic rock songs and the like. So last night after work, Marco took us to dinner with some of the other office people and then we went to a different recording studio and laid down a bunch of vocals for this kid's album. We were supposed to sound like kids, so we just sang our little hearts out, along with Marco and another guy named Joe. It turned out pretty cool! I love being in the studio. We're not exactly recording artists — we don't know how much of what we did is actually going to be used, but it was cool nonetheless.
We've been having a lot of fun up here. The Bowman's house is not really small, but not really big either. It has 3 bedrooms, so David sleeps on the floor in the basement and I'm camping out in Elizabeth's room until she gets home from this scuba diving camp she is doing in the West Indies or some such thing (whatever all those islands are called) and then I will move to the study. It hasn't been awkward at all, which is a relief, and we've been having fun with David's sisters.
Our first week here, we went to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir concert, which was really good, and the next night, we went to Canada's Wonderland theme park, which has the greatest roller coaster I've ever been on. Not the most exciting, but the best, because the seats are open so your arms and legs can fly around and there are no loops, just ups and downs and it is smooth and wonderful and we went on it many times (as many as we could — we were only there for a few hours after work because we got a deal on late passes). We also got Dippin' Dots. Happy day.
